    Can't see how that was the possible cause. Flares can be a symptom of pedal bone rotation & they put leverage pressure on weak laminae - so can perpetuate/allow rotation, but removing them doesn't effect what's happening inside negatively, only reduces any mechanical forces acting against strong connection.
