I have a mare who about a month ago stepped on a nail from a board the other horses had chewed and pulled down. I got that all healed up and a couple days ago she started limping on her other foot. Had the farrier come out this morning and check it out and she has an abscess on the other foot now. He says he thinks she just stepped on another nail, but I picked up the board and checked to make sure we had gotten all of the nails. Other than stepping on another nail, could anything else be causing this? Should I be concerened that there is something else going on or am I just lucky enough to have a clumsy mare??? :? SOOOOO frustrating!!!!

Abscesses can occur for a variety of reasons & puncture wounds can be very serious, but thankfully not that common. If you suspect it could be, I wouldn't at all think of it as 'just a nail puncture' in the least & would call an equine vet immediately. Depending on where the penetration & how deep, this can even be life threatening if not treated properly.

But if your horse is otherwise healthy hooved & it's soon after the injury, I'd guess it could be due to her having compensated & put extra pressure on the now abscessed hoof, or some such. *Of course without more info, that's only a guess tho.

I had the farrier come out the next morning and he cleaned and trimmed her hoof and found a "pin hole" where he says she more than likely stepped on a nail. He busted the abscess and drained it and put a med pack on it and she is now in a boot letting it heal. She was already walking better yesterday, thank goodness!!!!

Thank you so much for responding!!!! :)
