hoof abscess

My horse has an abscess and has for the past 6 weeks. First I had the farrier out and he said the my horse hyper extended his knee and that it wasn't an abscess. So I wrapped his knee and kept him in the stall for a bout one week. Then I noticed that his pastern was getting swollen so I had the vet out last week and he said that my horse had an abcsess and it was going up into his leg which is why his pastern and cannon was swollen. So he wrapped it and gave him antibiotics. My vet said the bandage was water proof and he could be out of the stall so I kept him out on the pasture.

The swelling went down now but he is still limping. I keep wrapping it with a drawing salve. So its been really muddy and wet outside and his foot is really moist and I just don't know if I should keep wrapping it with the drawing salve and maybe let it dry out? I just feel like im not doing enough to make it better.

Oh and I locked him up today so he won get any more mud.

As a rule, I wouldn't lock a horse up for an abscess, or give bute or antibiotics, but there are exceptions. While allowing his feet to be damp by wrapping with a poultice can allow an abscess to erupt through softening the horn, if it doesn't erupt, I wouldn't keep it up & if he's in constantly wet footing I would also think this was possibly the problem - has he got any seedy toe? Thrush?

If you would like to post hoof pics & more info, we could provide more specific opinions/advice about your horse.
