    Hoof Supplement question

    My QH mare has thin walls and once the weather has dried up, her hoofs are cracking. So far she has kept her shoes on for reining, barrel racing and trail riding. My farrier is not a fan of supplements but he suggested we look into one for her. He suggested Farrier's Formula, which I can buy through him. My reason for being skeptical is because he is a dealer/retailer for this particular brand and gets a cut.

    Has anyone used Farrier's Formula or some other hoof supplement to help build up stronger walls? How do these supplements work with other supplements? She does not get grain, but 1 lb of LMF Super Supplement with alfalfa pellets each day. She cannot tolerate grain but needed something with extra vitamin E.

    Hi;

    I use Biotin Plus. It is sold in a silver plastic bag. It seems to help my mare grow hooves. It could also be wishful thinking on my part. Just make sure to have your feed analyzed so you don't get to much of something, like selenium which is bad for hooves. (been there)

    We have virtually no selenium here, so her regular supplement does have some in it, but it has the minimum amount per serving. I have already emailed the maker of her supplement with the nutrition info in the one the farrier recommended to see if there was going to be anything too much in there. My trainer is also doing a little research and asking some of her friends what/if they've ever had success because one of her horses has the same problem. 2 horses out of a herd of 30 is not cause for concern because my other horse had rock hard feet and has the exact same diet, and, save a couple with some genetic issues, the others have decent feet too.

    I've been using SmartHoof (regular) for almost 2 years now. I absolutely love the stuff. The farrieri had wheni stayed said my horse didn't need it for his feet, but that the ingredients in it were beneficial for the rest of the body add well. Every farrier I've used since had always mentioned how great his feet look and how healthy they are. This is through last year's drought and the previous spring's excessive rainfall.
