Horizontal hoof crack

Hello, so last June my horse got a pretty bad abscess in the sole of his hoof. Vet popped it, then we had to keep it wrapped for a week and the bandages sort of caused this horizontal groove, which has lead to crack. It basically healed but since winter came its opened up. It's about 1in long and 1/4in deep and it fills op with sand and dirt all the time. I am worried that it might open up more. What should I do?i dont think the excessive moisture is helping either. Should I buy some hoof growth formula?Thank you

I've never heard of a properly applied bandage deforming a hoof, much less to the extent that a crack is caused. However, an abscess that comes out through the coronary band can certainly cause a horizontal crack. Perhaps your vet didn't get it all or there was more than one pocket of infection.

If the crack is spreading or deepening, I would definitely get your farrier to take a look at it. It's hard to say what the best course of action would be without seeing it, but a hoof supplement might help it grow out faster. If the crack is from last June, it ought to be pretty close to the bottom of the hoof by now. I think 8 months is about the amount of time it takes to grow all new hoof wall if I'm remembering correctly. In the meantime, your farrier might have some suggestions to stabilize it and keep it from spreading.

Oddly it's not even close to the cornet band, it's half way down the hoof.

You may want to get some photos to post but from your description it sounds like there's something going seriously wrong with the internal hoof structures.

I don't know what you did to ascertain the root cause of the abscess: e.g. x rays to check for pedal bone rotation or sinking of the boney column? But from the description I'd be seriously concerned that might be the case and the pressure is causing the hoof to crack.

I'd suggest vet and farrier as urgent and important (from the description and without the benefit of good case notes and photos)

Feewf! Called my farrier up today, turns out I was overreacting, the abcess did come out the cornet band and the opening has slowly came down as the hoof as grown out, he drew me a picture haha. Gosh having horses is stressful sometimes!
