Agree with you Too Many, that it's not always inappropriate IMO. But just a caution on the above - when an abscess is opened up, frequently this leaves the corium open to the elements, and while cleanliness is vital, there has been evidence that chemicals such as iodine & tar will inhibit & sometimes can completely ****** the growth of new sole. As they now suggest with iodine on human wounds, I'd use it initially, but not continually - pack the wound with Manuka honey instead, which is a mild antiseptic and promotes healing.
