New horse dragging left hind only limping at a walk long hooves

Ok so.... I just got an abused mare from someone, too much for him to handle. She does not stand tied for anything absolutely freaks out. I have had her since Monday and yesterday she stood a good 20 min with no lounging or work! Yay!

Ok here is the bad thing. Her back feet are pretty bad. I will post a pic. She just started limping on her back hind 2days ago and it is only at a walk. She drags her back left moreso than her back right. She is splay footed and I thought she was cow hocked pretty bad but I think it is just her feet. Her feet are flared on only the outside wall. Could she be limping and dragging her feet because they are so long and over grown? The farrier will be out next week to check them out but I am just wondering if it could be her feet messing her up. Any replies are welcomed! Thanks so much!!

Her feet could certainly be the cause of the dragging. As far as limping goes, it could be related, might not be. I'd start with the farrier and go from there.

I'd call the vet, too. It will take quite a while to get those feet back in shape, but the right especially looks like the leg is under way too much strain. I'd try to get the vet and farrier working together for this one.

Agreed. It looks to me like it is more than just a hoof issue. I'd have both the vet and farrier there together if I were you. If I had to guess, I think she might have a stifle issue.

Ditto the others.

The right leg, from the angle, looks like she may have fallen or went over backward (either by force or out of fear). That could possibly be generated from clear up in the sacrum area or the hip.

I would also seriously think about lining up a quality chiropractor. If you've not had experience with an equine chiropractor that is good, there are several of us on this forum that would be happy to bore you with our success stories

I would definitely need a chiropractors number! I want to get her comfortable! She does not seem to be in pain anywhere.... I have rubbed her down everywhere! Palpated everywhere... Nothing seems to bother her since I got her away from the place she was kept! I stretched all four of her legs really well and she loved it! I have felt all around her stifle area her hips, cannon bones everything.... The only thing I have notice on her is her right cannon bone... It's has a large lump all the way around in one spot when I was rubbing her down..... Seems like it is from an injury do to hobbling but I am not sure... ;(
