Hogsfuel is pretty common in the pacific NW to create 'mud-free' turnouts for the 3/4 of the year where it's raining. My barn also puts gravel on the high-traffic areas (by the gates and up to where to concrete walkway to the barn starts) since even hogsfuel will become saturated in those areas.

ETA- I also see it used as arena footing commonly.
