Want to learn to trim hooves - Ohio

I was wondering if anyone could give me some direction on great educational tools to trim the barefoot hoof. I'd really like to start trimming my own horses hooves. They all run barefoot. Not really looking to do this for a job.. just for my own personal use.

Thanks so much in advance.

I grew up learning to trim and have never attended a farrier school. My one suggestion to you is to shadow a farrier and watch and learn their technique. You have to be very attentive to detail and learn your tools. I also suggest start researching the parts of a hoof and the proper angle of a cut and all the different tools to be used and the cost. Obviously the best thing to do is enroll in a farrier class (which is a college course). Also if you know of someone who does it ask if you can shadow them.

What area are you in..? I know one around Raccoon State Park in PA, right by the Ohio border that might be willing to take on an apprentice, seeing as he offered to teach both myself and my friend.

Pete Ramey - Making Natural Hoofcare work for you and anything by Jamie Jackson. Just steer clear of any info pertaining to the Strasser method. I don't know of any clinics or I'd be at them myself. I've recently become very hooked on learning about hooves.

Ive got Millwaters Farriery: the illustrated dictionary of horsefhoeing and hoofcare. I've also found lots of great videos on youtube about natural barefoot trims and tons of great websites. I've been doing a lot of research and I've been watching farriers do hooves for 15 years, but I just feel like they don't spend a lot of time on the hooves and do a quick trim for everyone no matter what THEY might need.

I also recommend Pete Ramey's book. Its a great start to understanding the hoof, and an easy read. I started with that book. I carried it under my arm for 2 weeks and read it 5 times. It's exactly what you need to get started with the barefoot trim. I've got his latest book now. Been under my arm for a month and am on my 2nd run with it.

You know why I like Pete Ramey? Because he doesn't think he's the guru of horse feets. He makes mistakes and he learns from them and shares that. He's not so full of himself that questions bother him. Most of all he makes sense. Its gotta make sense!

The best case scenario is to call in barefoot trimmer and learn with hoof in hand. He should let you and show you how to maintain the trim in between his visits. Soon, you'll be able to it yourself. Best way to learn....with a professional and hoof in hand. This is for your own personal horses. If you tend to hang up a shingle, that's a whole nuther ball of wax...clinics, school, books, certification, dissections, reading rads, nutrition etc.
