    Anna's tentative venture into painting.

Sooo, I haven't been drawing for a long time, and this was the first time painting in about 8 years!
So yeah, critique/advice is welcome, but be nice!

And my second one, maybe not as good as the first?

    Hello!
Good to see that you are getting back into painting!...i love the contrast in the first painting, and the eye in the second. As advice I would say maybe work on the top part of the head, but it looks pretty good already. You could add the lashes or part of the other eye to make it seem more 3d. The main thing is just to practice, practice, practice! Have fun =)

Thanks for the advice! I've just finished college for the summer, so I have all the time in the world (around work) to be practicing, so I will be!!
I might try and sneak a few snaps of the horses at work to work on, I seem to be struggling to find pictures I like to do. It's tricky, as if I don't really like a picture, I don't really feel any motivation to draw it, if that makes sense? I like the first one better really, I think I got the accuracy better, the second one just looks off to me

I agree with you about how hard it is to draw a picture that one may not like to begin with. There are many, many people on the forum who would love to have their horses painted. I sometimes take photos off the forum and paint them just for fun. It is a public forum , right?

Your second painting appeals more to me. I like the strong compositional aspect of it. You divide up the page very clearly and use the very dark line of the show halter to move the viewer's eye through the picture.
Anatomically, the Arab horse's head is a bit off, particuarly the nose and the porportion of the nose to the jaw. I like the simplisity of the shading and the color for the background. I like the strongness of the layout. No need to always be perfectly accurate on the horse. Better to be interesting!

Yeah, I hate painting stuff I feel no connection to too. You can also try composing images out of multiple photos... sort of like a collage. You can make it seem like one coherent picture or more collage-like. I like doing this because I can incorporate whatever interests me most!

I might try the collage idea, it sounds fun!!
Also, I might hunt around to see if there's any photos on here I connect to, and ask the owner if I can draw them? I might do a few sketches as well, seeing as I find that easier, and I can work on compostion/conformation rather than the painting
