My Art Journal and evolution :)

Well I decided to finally make an art Journal to encourage me to practice more.

These first drawing were done in 2009 (I don't know where my other sketch book is, but it has more drawing from 2008-2009) but if I find it I promise to take pics and post them. I know in the other book I did a few nice pieces.

The first pic is a portrait of my sister. Hehe I was so proud. I was 14ish I believe. The other horse pics were done without pictures for reference, hence why their bodies are not proportional sometimes (head too small or too long etc.)
The last pic is a failed portrait of Taylor Swift... :P

These are things I did in 2010. I had pictures for these... I don't know for 2009 I went through a picture-less phase lol. :P

The first 2 are in ink.

The 3rd is in charcoal.

The 4th is an eye I did with instructions I found on the Internet. Haha no lol I am not that gifted. :P I never could have done that alone.

The 5ft and 6th are more experiments with ink.

And etc...

The pastel portrait of Wagner was for school. It was my first time using pastels and I intend to continue in the future, though I must admit I am lazy. And that project was sooo much work I was drained by the time I finished it.

Now for 2011. :)
And for fun I also put the kleenex cover I sewed for my friend. :) I made mini ones too but haven't had the time to take a picture of them.

Gosh Hidalgo, these are terrific!!!!! I just don't know where to start. Some of them are just so full of life. Maybe inaccurate anatomically, but who cares? I would much rather look a piece of artwork that engages me than one that is anatomically accurate. Think of Picasso? Anatomically accurate?
I like the one of the horse walking away from you. I can really see it's back swinging. The tiniest addition of aa horizon line or a suggestion of a shadow or other things that suggest "place" will hellp it to exist in space. But don't go overboard.
The one cantering toward you with some color only in the background is also wonderful and I love it's unfinished look and uneven treatment. YOu allow some things to be more important and other to just kind of be suggested.
I am not as impressed with the accrylic. It is very hard to have the same lightness of the pencil, ink or charcoal works when using accrylics. I personally don't care for them except for when doing craft work (I paint birdhouses sometimes ).
Your work show defiinte talent. You might enter a contest sometime?

Thanks a lot! I love to paint but it get's so messy and only do it a few times a year. Though I hope in the future to achieve something that looks very realistic. Like if I took a picture. :)

I would love to enter a contest but don't really know of any. My town hall now has Artist show cases and I might do something for the next one. But they have themes and I am not always inspired.
And ya I am still working on the accurateness of my anatomy. Hopefully soon you can tell me I have it both: perfect proportions and liveliness. :)

Thanks again for looking and telling me what you think! I will post more soon, if I can find the time with all my homework.

Just to set the record straight, by no means do I think that I have correct anatomical porportions. Some of my stuff I will look back and say, "ARgh, the nose is too short, or those front legs are just a tad too long."
I DO use a pencil and put it up against the photos (on my laptop screen) and find how one part relates to another , a ratio of sizes, and then go to my drawing and see if the same body parts have the same ratio.

My husband points out to me that there is software to draw outlines form photos and I could just "copy" exactly the image and then paint inside the copied outline. But, somehow, then I feel like it's cheating. Hm m m . ..
That's kind of what makes painting impressive; that it looks real but we know it was created not cloned.
