My Drawing - Advice?

I think this is the first time i've actually attempted to draw something properly, with proper shading and all that. It was meant to be Maverick but his star is all wrong. :(
I know the shading is horrible and I hate the forelock ad mane, I just couldn't get it to look right! And I need to sort out his righ ear.
Any advice on how to improve would be much appreciated!

Sorry the picture is a bit washed out.

That is really good.

I know the eye isn't quite right, I think that's why it doesn't look like him..

That is pretty nice.

Try to make the mane less flat and add some high lights? Take a bit off of the right ear so it curves more and remember that ears aren't flat. That is all the advice that I can give, I have no skill at drawing horses.

Here's what I do -
I do a simple outline type of thing on the paper. Then I use graphite to add basically the medium shade - that way you can add shadows and highlights. I blend it all with my finger to make it really soft looking and then I do ALL the darkest stuff, super dark and blendy, and just work up. For highlights try using an eraser - if you blend well it'll look really natural.
Your drawing is really good! Just some practice shading will make it better :] good luckkk!

Thanks for the replies. (:

Harue - Thanks! I know the mane is pretty awful, it looks so flat and yukky. ): In the picture the ears looked so black and I couldn't see any detail and I didn't fancy making it up, when I do another drawing i'll do alot more to the ears.

Dannys_girl16 - That sounds pretty good to me! I'd like to use charcoal sometime as it will all look so much better blended in. Thanks, i'll keep practising! ^_^
