New drawing - help?

My friend's birthday was last week and I promised I'd draw 'her' pony as a present.

Well, she finally sent me the picture a few hours ago. Of course it was a slightly blurry, small cell phone picture.

And awkward, too!

BUT...it was her present so I went with it as best I could.

It's not very good.

I liked drawing the hindquarters/midsection [I know the back is..shaped wrong. I fixed that]. I put on my drawing playlist and had fun. It all went downhill once I hit the legs/face. I have plans to fix the legs but the face is frustrating me beyond BELIEF.

It looks kind of like a 5th grader drew it. And this is after manymanymanymany tries! I don't know why, I just can't do it. :\

Here's the drawing:

And the reference:

For some reason, the contrast is way off. You can't see half of the tones I used, haha. Ah well, that's what I get for taking the picture with my phone. If I can find my camera, I'll take a better one.

*sigh* this was a disaster. The more I look at it, the more I think I'm better off just ditching this and starting over.

How do I make the face look less...bad? How much of the background should I draw?

HELP?!

The head is cute, but to short to be the real ponies head. I think maybe if you draw a reference line where the center of the head would be at the correct angle and length and work around that, it might help. Best of luck!

its really cute if you add the grown it may help with the legs ;) umm the head is to short and the angle of the body is wrong in the pic the hindquarters are more behind and in your drawing the body is more horizontale if you know what I mean. Add a little of the background like that it doesnt look like his floating on air lol. Just a little advice if you do decide to resart don't scrap this drawing just incase and it maybe help with the other one. It also helps if you draw the squeletten first and for the head start with the ears first it usually helps me or the nose. Best of luck !!! Don't give up I know its frustrating at times you have alot of talent!!

I totally see what you guys both mean. I made the head a good bit longer and while it looks better, I'm still going to redraw the pony since it's a present and I want it as close to perfect as I can get.

And almost nothing gets removed from the sketchbook...makes for some embarrassing moments when people look through them cause I have some really horrible stuff in there.
