Just finished this painting for my momma. I can't show it to anyone because it's a surprise, so I figured I could post it here to get *secret* opinions. It's watercolour, ink, graphite, and even a little crayon.
Be aware that my camera compromised a lot of the details, as well as the picture size. Here is the hummingbird at closer to actual size (it's a fairly big painting). The flash changed all of my pencil work to either white or silver, so where it's those colours I actually used a quite soft leaded pencil and it appears pitch black.
I was going for an art nouveau sort of tribal look. I actually looked up some African textiles and used them as my inspiration for the background.
Everything in the picture has something to do with my mother or somehow relates to her. The hummingbird is the most blatant relation, as she loves them. I worked this whole picture around the hummingbird, and did a lot of life drawing to work myself into creating my own version of a hummingbird. I drew them in every position imagineable.
When I really analyze the picture, it's not my favourite. My artwork is usually moody and evocative, erring on the surreal - so it was very out of my comfort zone. I also rushed on the inkwork and spoiled a few spots.
Anyways, just wanted to post something.
