Paper Mâché

One of my major projects at college this year requires me to use paper mâché. I've chosen to design a zoo/park dedicated to endangered species. I'm making mini models of the enclosures, using paper mâché.

I started yesterday, I mixed pva with water, got my paper towel and paper mached a sheet of cardboard as a base. It hasn't dried overnight and the cardboard sheet has curled up. So now I have a wet, soggy, curled up base

What am I doing wrong?

I know this isn't exactly horse related, but it is the art section, so I thought I'd give it a try

Maybe too much water? Too much glue? Who knows?! Hope it all works out ok :)

I usually add flour to my paper mache, and use news paper strips as opposed to paper towel.

I wonder if one part of the piece is a lot wetter than another, then the contraction of them as they dry will differ a lot. What if you preshrink the base? something like prestretching watercolor paper. see google for how to do this.
