Ok, me being an art major I ask you to please take none of this personally and also remember that no one is truly an expert. With that said I'm going to pretend I'm critiquing just as I would in class.
First off, for being your first attempt in pencil, this is great! What did you draw with previously? You did a great job with the face given that its foreshortened, that's something that is reallly tricky! I also like the way the mane attracts attention down away from the horse to the bottom corner of the piece, it's a good sense of movement.
As for things to work on, two things really bug me. One, the way the neck bows out seems off, and it meets with the horse's shoulder akwardly (IMHO). One of my teachers once pointed out that just because something looks a certain way in your referance picture doesn't mean you need to draw it that way. This is as issue that may come up a lot when working with animals, especially moving ones. Secondly, on the chest and to the left of the mane the shading is very blocky and doesn't flow well from one shade to another. Almost looks like there is a six pack on his neck! Haha sorry. My eye get's caught under the mane in that deep black spot, it's becoming a focal point I don't think you were going for.
That's what I see right now. It really is nice, drawing is tough and takes lots of practice for many of us :P you seem to be a lucky natural!
