Please critique my first pencil drawing.

With no formal art classes, this is my first pencil drawing. Please be brutal, I want very badly to get better. The mane was a bit rushed and could have had more time on it. Opps.

Ok, me being an art major I ask you to please take none of this personally and also remember that no one is truly an expert. With that said I'm going to pretend I'm critiquing just as I would in class.

First off, for being your first attempt in pencil, this is great! What did you draw with previously? You did a great job with the face given that its foreshortened, that's something that is reallly tricky! I also like the way the mane attracts attention down away from the horse to the bottom corner of the piece, it's a good sense of movement.

As for things to work on, two things really bug me. One, the way the neck bows out seems off, and it meets with the horse's shoulder akwardly (IMHO). One of my teachers once pointed out that just because something looks a certain way in your referance picture doesn't mean you need to draw it that way. This is as issue that may come up a lot when working with animals, especially moving ones. Secondly, on the chest and to the left of the mane the shading is very blocky and doesn't flow well from one shade to another. Almost looks like there is a six pack on his neck! Haha sorry. My eye get's caught under the mane in that deep black spot, it's becoming a focal point I don't think you were going for.

That's what I see right now. It really is nice, drawing is tough and takes lots of practice for many of us :P you seem to be a lucky natural!

Nice drawing! Zeke pointed out the two things that stuck out to me, but other than that, it's a great drawing! Necks from the front are hard

Nice!
I believe the head might also be too small.

Beautiful work, you have a lovely soft, flowing feel to your drawings. Just keep practicing and you'll be brilliant in no time!!

I have nothing more to add from what has already been said.

Azarni, I believe the reference shot that the OP took this from, has the horse looking front on with it's head lifted. An extremely difficult angle to draw from, and the OP has done an absolutely superb job of achieving this angle.

Thank you all so much for your comments.
As I said this is my first drawing so every ounce of criticism is greatly appreciated. This was a drawing of a Fresian who I had photographed and drew from that. He had an incredibly strong neck with SO many shades. I completely agree with the dark spots. I hated this drawing for the longest time because of that.

I agree 100%
And regarding the reference-kudos to you for drawing at that angle! That kind of head shot makes me cringe just thinking about drawing it. You did an awesome job.
