Exclamation Please help me with my painting!

I started this painting today of three of our horses and I have started painting one of them and it is NOT turning out like I had hoped! I really need some help from you artists out there Please?
The horse I am painting is my boy Red ( you can look at him in my barn if that helps) and I started using a reference but now I have kinda completley changed the picture so it isnt that much help. I am using acrylic and it is probably my 5th time using them I need help haha

Note: around the edges of him there is masking tape that's why it looks weird.

Please Please any advice would be so great to me thankyou

    Hi Caitlin,

It's a good start. The eye is especially good, and I like that you've chosen blue as the background, because it is a good complementary color to the red of the horse.

With acrylic, you need to probably use more paint and paint more layer and thicker color. I find acrylic very challenging, and hardly ever use it. I prefer the way watercolor does a lot of the work for me with it's unpredictable, but gorgeous natural movement (wicking and running and blending) with the water ,color and the paper.

Use more paint, use complementary colorse to create shadows and get some lights in there . Overall feeling is too dark.

Complementary means across from each other on the color wheel.
    Such as yellow - purple
    Orange - blue
    Red - green
