Portrait drawing?

So I know this is the 'horse artwork' section but I figured that everyone wouldn't be that upset if I start a thread about drawing people.

I have been trying to start drawing a few more things other than horses and I have actually been enjoying drawing people. I have done a few drawings all are only sketch quality. I was wondering if anyone had any advice on drawing humans? Like proportions? What are the main things that you need to look at getting right (e.g eyes :?)?

Here are a couple of the first trys I had at drawing a person.

Neither of them have a real likeness to the photo. The babies expression I got right but It still doesnt have a real likeness to the photo. I dont have permission to post the references either so sorry but you will just have to give advice from these photos.
(not happy with the babies eyes but I kept redoing them and then I just gave up.

I love the portrait of the baby. Children are usually a lot more difficult to draw since their proportions are so different from adults. But that's just adorable.
My best advice with drawing people is to find a system that works best for you to get you started. Whether it's with a grid, measuring out the proportions...whatever works best. I got a couple books from barnes and noble that help with the process and they've been super helpful.
And keep keep practising. No matter how bad you think it might look, it's a learning process that unfortunately never ends. I've been working at drawing people for a few years now and I've got a long way to go!
Good luck!
