Roaning on photoshop?

So I've been drawing horses on photoshop for awhile now, but I can't seem to figure out how to do roaning or greying. I would love to do a picture of my mare, Gypsy, but everything I try doesn't seem to work out.

Are there any tutorials out there on it or can anybody try to explain to me how they do the roaning or greying?
