In search of horseshoes

I'm not exactly sure where to put this, but I recently was given a bunch of horseshoes so I could use them for crafts to sell. However, I've used them all up and am now looking to acquire new ones. I'm not exactly sure how to go about doing this..... I was considering just asking, but is that something people expect money for? I was thinking of saying I'll pay $1 per shoe, but is that not enough? Should I simple ask and if they want money then put that offer down (or a higher one). I have never done this before and do not know most barns' policies for getting rid of old horse shoes.

I should think most places would be glad of you taking them and you should get them free. If you can find the number of the farrier and ask him to collect you a bucket full while he's out shoeing one day?
I have several lying around the house and my pony doesn't even wear metal shoes....

Did you have any rusty ones? If so, how did you get the rust off?

I have a small pile of rusty shoes but I'm not sure how to proceed without having to hand scrub every single one.

I think a farrier would definitely be able to help you. You might also try large training barns or maybe even making an ad on craigslist if you live in a place with lots of horses. People would probably be glad to give shoes to somebody who wants to use them for craft rather than just throw them away.

I'm really curious. What are you making with so many horse shoes?

Some times I just put leather on them to hang them and then hang a little horsehair tassels on them or have a charm hang in the center. Some are horseshoe dream catchers (with either feathers or horsehair tassels). Eventually I am going to start welding where I'll make horseshoe hangers, wine holders, or other things.

To get the rust off I usually scrub with steelwool or a Dremel. If that's difficult, I'll soak them in a soapy water mixture for a little then try again. I then soak them in one part bleach and four parts water for two or three minutes to kill any bacteria. Rinse them off and dry them.
