New Home!

Hey guys! I'm bringing my new gelding to my stable tomorrow. Now he is my first horse, but I've been working with horses for years and am very comfortable. I was wondering what your suggestions are on riding him on his first day in a new place. Is it a good idea or should I let him get used to his surroundings first? Maybe just a short little ride around the arena? Any suggestions for helping him get comfortable in his new home quickly? He's moving directly into a herd of mostly mares, and has been low on the herd pecking order in the past. Thanks for your suggestions!

I wouldnt ride for the first few days just so he gets use to the new place. Maybe lounge a bit? I don't ride the horses I get for 3 to 4 days after they are home then I start light riding, for a week then ride him more after that.

In my experience, a low gelding going into a herd of mares is going to be busy the first few days trying not to get his butt kicked too bad. Give him some time.

I know my moms horse is low and my two were keeping him away and it was a while before they all settled down. And get use to each other.

Yeah that was what I thought. As sad as it is, I'm eager to ride him. Oh well, its for the best.
