Hi All,
I am moving from Asheville NC two hours over to West Knoxville. I already have the house, I just need a place for my two mares to stay. I have been seeking a place to board for a month now. Apparently my needs are like searching for a unicorn. :blueunicorn: .
I have discovered that pasture board in my area is almost nonexistent at boarding barns. So far I have found two that are 20 minutes or less from my house that offer pasture board. One is $375 per horse and includes blanketing and round bales in the winter, $475 if you want them to come in once a day and give grain. This is a 70 acre pasture with trees for shelter and 14 other horses. The other barn is $400 for pasture board and includes grain 1x a day, round bales when needed and run in sheds.
I ask all the barns I call if they know of anyone, even private owner, who might have pasture board and they have all basically told me best of luck finding that in W. Knox. :/
I have a semi retired mare with extreme allergies to dust/shavings/sawdust/pine smell/molds/mildews. By putting her on 24/7 pasture, she stays ride-able and requires only a low dose of medication. She cannot stay in a barn. She also happens to be very bossy and alpha mare. The only horse that I have ever seen boss her around is her mother. This worries me that she will get hurt, or hurt others in a large herd setting. My other mare is a thoroughbred-x. I have tried to keep her in a stall to recover from injuries in the past and she gets to restless. After 24hrs she starts chewing on the wood, kicking the walls, dumping her water, etc. She has never been with more than 2 other horses in a pasture at a time, so I also have no idea how she would be in a large group. Both of these horses have been on pasture and in paddocks with little to no issue. So, you can see why I am actively seeking pasture or paddock board. Besides pastures being unavailable, the cost of board in general is WAY higher than what I am used to seeing (it is around $200 here).
So, do any of you folks around the Knoxville area have any suggestions? I have posted an ISO on some Knoxville horse related pages with very little luck to finding something close to my house.
Also, this is the first time I have boarded with someone I didn't previously know and having my horses potentially more than 5 minutes away from my home. How far becomes too far to drive to see your horse every day? I have been looking at places that are within 20 minutes but have seen some potential places that are 30 -45 minutes away....
Thanks in advance!
