Questions on boarding! Calgary people take a look too!

I might be moving up near Calgary for a little while and I would need to board my horse. I found one barn that is within 2 min. driving distance or 15 min. walking distance of the place I would be living! It is called Riqueza Riding Academy and I was wondering if any of you knew of it? It looks like a real nice facility and the pasture board is $230 which is more affordable than some of the other stables I looked at.

I have a few questions though as I've never boarded before! This is mainly a hunter/jumper barn. I do neither. Berdi is a western horse and we do a lot of trail rides and just general bareback riding also. I use her simply for pleasure - not competition. Would I fit in there or would it be kind of strange? I would like to take some lessons maybe there and would be happy to take english lessons as that is what I took a few years ago. I'm planning on buying an english saddle sometime, as soon as I can afford it!

Also, what are the vaccinations I would have to have current on Berdi to board there? This is Alberta, Canada if it makes any difference. I'm assuming for the price they are asking that they provide the hay - right? I would probably have to provide the RB at my own expense. Other then farrier and the before mentioned things are there any other things I would have to provide?

Anyhow - I'm just very interested in you answers as I've never boarded a horse before and would like to know more about it in case I end up boarding her. Thank-you!

I can't answer your questions as I do not know the barn. I think you might do better to ask the barn owner these questions in an email or phone call.

As far as fitting in, that depends on the personalities of the people there. But honestly I would worry more about the level of care for your horse than making friends.

I've heard of Riqueza and their barn has been at some of our shows, but that's as much as I know.

You'll probably want to talk to the barn owners to find out more information, especially regarding questions about you being a western rider. You'll also want to check to see if they have trail access. Some barns around Calgary do not have access to trails unless you have a trailer.

A quick google search or Kijiji search for horse boarding around Calgary will reveal a lot of results. I'm just not familiar with that area as I'm in calgary and very south. If pleasure and trail riding is all that you are looking for you may even be able to find a more private barn. Sometimes board can be expensive around Calgary and you may pay an arm and a leg for average facilities.

It doesn't matter to me a lot if they have trails or not as I can just ride on the bridle path and in the arena. I just wouldn't totally "fit in" in that I would ride western mostly, not english. Thank-you for your responses! I'll give some barns a call when I decide if I'm going or not.
