warning to boarders-crooked horseowners

just a little word of warning to all horse boarders out there.always do a complete written contract with horse owners and do background checks. I learned the hard way. About 5 years back, when I was just starting out with boarding , I had a woman bring her 3 horses in. I was a little too trusting and did a verbal agreement.the first few years were ok, paid late a few months but still paid. Then she told me she was broke ,could she pay for the whole year when she got her tax refund.i told her ok but there'd be extra charges for interest. Ok ,she paid in full in april. But then over the last couple years , she tried telling me we agreed on $60/month - finally got her to pay full $100 after lots of arguing, she told her friends I wasnt charging any boarding in the summer since I didnt have to buy hay when they were on pasture and tried to get out of paying her own boarding in the summer.last straw was when she fell way behind on her boarding. I told her pay up or the horses were mine until I got paid. She brought the sheriff , telling him "we had a verbal agreement- free boarding in exchange for help on the farm" .she not only plans to take her horses, with the sheriff's ok, she's taking 3 purebred friesen foals belonging to me and my brother in law because she had them papered in her name as soon as they were born

Wait, how was she able to register foals in her name if they aren't hers? Are the dams hers?

So this woman has been with you for 5 years and after the first issue you never thought to write up a contract?

Who owns the foals dams and I'm with SEAmom how did she get them in her name? This all sounds so bizzare.

Sorry, not buying this mess of a story.

If she's not the owner of the dams, there's no way ANY registry would register the foals in her name.

As far as the 'sheriff's okay' that she take the horses, that's not up to the police. It's up to the courts to decide who does or doesn't own the horses. Police are only there to keep the peace, not make a decision about who gets what.

If you're trying to rile us up and form a lynch mob, maybe you should try telling a story that doesn't have so many holes in it.

You want the truth? You can't HANDLE the truth!

Why would you continue to board someones horses for them for 5 years... When they don't make payments and are obviously a problem to you. And with the foal thing.. Im confused.

I guess I was too much of a sucker for a hard luck story. Whenever she gave me grief about the boarding , she would beg me not to kick her out after she apologized saying she had noplace else to go that she could afford. As far as the foals go , I havent seen the papers but she told the sheriff ,myself and my brother in law she had papers for them.2 of the 3 were from her mares which my brother in law paid to have bred with her permission when they were dating and paid for all other expenses. The 3rd was from a mare that she and I bought together as a filly 4 years ago from a friend of hers in south dakota in the hopes of starting a small friesen operation when she got older.as far as SpeedRacers comment about me trying to start a lynch mob, I just wanted to warn people not to make the stupid mistakes I did and be careful. If I wanted to start a lynch mob I would have given the boarders name

First, there are 2 sides to every story. I am pretty sure she has one also. For you to invest $$ in a horse with anyone without something in writing-well.......yeah-not too smart. As for your brother-in-law or whoever the guy who paid all the stud fees etc? He was her "boyfriend"? They were dating. Stuff happens. Perhaps this will teach him to keep his wallet (and ........) where they belong.

Seeing as how she's saying THE SHERIFF is enforcing all this..none of it is possible, unless the
Lady had the sheriff there strictly for peace keeping purposes.

If she's petitioning to take the foals she needs to take it to court and get papers saying she owns said horses.

Why is there no BOS for the three foals if your BIL paid her for them? If he did pay for them why was the registration never transferred to his name?
Sounds like she has yalls number. She got your bil to pay for free breeding with no sales contract so theyre still safely hers.

Like franknbeans said there is 2 sides to every story and this story has ALOT of holes and alot of things are not adding up here.
