Hello, I have a 9 year old Arabian Maiden mare. I bred her May 6/7, 2012. Today she would be around 393 days into gestation. I am able to listen with a stethoscope to the baby's heart beat. My vet showed me where to push on her to see the baby move. And we have been trail riding 2 times a week. She is very High Strung! I have also moved two of my horses to another pasture a 1/4 mile away to give her peace and quiet. I left her a buddy as she goes postal if left alone. Is this normal, should I be more concerned. I have just talked to so many people and read so much I am not sure if I am imaging the movements and that this is a false pregnancy or if she is just being very stubborn. All advise welcome!

I would call a vet. Longer gestation periods can sometimes be symptomatic of issues with the foal like hypothyroidism or fescue toxicosis. A few of my friends have had mares go from 364 days to 370 and 372 days this year with healthy foals, but that I think is right at the end of what is considered "normal range". Are you absolutely positive that is when she was bred? Is it possible she was bred 3 or 4 weeks later?

The bold is highly, HIGHLY unlikely.

If you are honestly concerned, call and discuss it with you vet.

I have a call into the vet, waiting for a call back tomorrow! I have monitored her throughout the pregnancy and she hasn't come back into heat since having her bred in May so i don't think it would have happened after that. She is bagging up but hasn't dripped milk really. She had wax last night but no change today/tonight. I will post pics as soon as I figure out how to tho. I am new to the forum today! Thanks for the input!!!

I spoke with the vet she said not to worry if she is bagging up (which she is) that with her being an Arbian Maiden mare so long as she is not showing signs of distress to just keep waiting. So waiting is what I shall continue to do. Fingers crossed it won't be much longer!!!

We had the baby and we lost it :( . The vet came out and checked her and she is now on an abx. She palpated her and made sure everything came out and said if we want to try again that she would flush her first. I am not sure what kind of grass is in the pasture I can ask my Uncles as I use one of his pastures to put them out on and when they are home they have a small pasture but mostly eat hay.

I'm sorry to hear the baby didn't make it. The reason I asked what type of pasture you have is because I was worried about fescue toxicosis. (from a fungus that grows on fescue) It can cause prolonged gestation (as long as 13 to 14 months), foaling difficulties, thickened placentas (including “red bag” emergencies), and a decrease or complete absence of milk upon delivery.

Again, I'm very sorry to hear about the foal.
