I have a 5 month old filly who is 13.2hh, barely a hand shy of her dam who is about 14.1hh. Her sire is only 15hh, but her grandsire was 16.2hh and the only height in her bloodlines. She is a Tennessee Walker, as are all in her lines. Is this tall for her age? My farrier acted like she was a giant for her age, and he raises tallish QHs.
Thanks!

Hehe that is how tall my yearling QH colt was when I got him. I'm assuming he will mature at about 14 1hh. You never know your foal could be a throw back!

Im pretty sure its like measure from the fetlock to the knee than times it by something and it will give you a "guess" as to how large your foal will be, but im not sure at all. It was something a blacksmith told me a while ago.
A good bet is to see any other progeny the dam has thrown. Although we had two full sisters, one was a solid 16hh and built like a tank and the other was around 15hh or shorter and built like a torpedo so its a hit and miss. Simplest way i think is to take the dam and the sires heights and average it out. Nothing is guarenteed but it gives you a little helping hand lol.

I believe that you are supposed to take a string and measure from the point of the fetlock to the point of the elbow, double it and that is how tall your colt will be when it is fully grown. Lots of old time horseman go by that and it is pretty accurate.
