    Baby on the way...

As some of you may know, I purchased a Shire mare about 2 months ago. At the time, she was pastured with a stallion, and regardless of how many ways I asked the current owner to separate them, she did not. The mare was ultrasounded the day before I purchased her and it was negative, but when we had her ultrasounded again this weekend, it came back positive. According to the vet's best guess of the fetus's age, she was bred within a few days of when I picked her up. The mare is impeccably bred and had a small show career as a youngster. Although the sire would not be my top choice of stallions in the world to breed her to, he does have multiple National Reserve Grand Champions to his name, and is, of course, a registered Shire as she is, so the foal will be registered and hopefully have a good chance of finding a new home.

Long and short, she is now 60 days along and well into the safe zone for pregnancies. I have already spoken with my vet about all of the care and maintenance she will be needing. So I'm really just wanting to get excited about the coming baby. Anyone willing to pitch an exciting comment or advise, outside of the veterinary or medical realm, feel free to do so.

    Foal
Also, forgot to mention, she has been bred before. Had a successful and healthy foal in 2010. I spoke with the people who owned her at the time, they said she had no problems birthing and was a good mother. So at least she has experience on her side, even though I don't. Right now I'm thanking my lucky stars horses have an 11 mo gestation, so I've still got about 9 months to research and prepare.

I'm sure by January, I'm going to be a ball of nerves and my mare is going to be sick of me constantly eyeing her belly. First-time foal mother...

If this is your first time, consider looking forward to something absolutely amazing in nature. Here are pics from our latest, just last Saturday. From birth to out in the pasture with mom in less than 3 hours.

    Foal
Not great pictures. But here was a snapshot of River a few weeks ago.

And this one was taken just after her positive ultrasound, snoozing in the stall. She acts like she's already got a 200lb child in there, lol.

She lives out on pasture, but we put her in the stall while we unhooked the trailer.
