Black X Red Dun

Whats the color possablities from these two colors. I've bred alot of horses over the years but never been into color. I have a young Red Dun stud that I'm going to breed to a black mare someone asked the color it could be and I'm not really sure. What if the mare is Homozygus for black? Not sure that she is but shes had 3 black foals out of 3 2 of the studs were sorrel and 1 black.

Oh and I could care less if anyone thinks I should buy a foal, if someone wants to know why I'm breeding them its because I want to, yes I know how to care for a weanling, yada, yada, yada. What I'm wanting to know is the colors it can be.

Color Calculator

Do you know the stallion's genetics?
Is he homozygous for dun? What about the agouti gene?

Assuming that you don't know if your mare is heterozygous for black:

Offspring Color Probability

25.00% -
Red Dun
25.00% -
12.50% -
Zebra Dun
12.50% -
12.50% -
12.50% -

Now if your mare is homozygous:

Offspring Color Probability

25.00% -
Zebra Dun
25.00% -
25.00% -
25.00% -

This is all assuming that your stallion is heterozygous for the agouti gene (bay gene) If he is homozygous you can only get a bay base or a chestnut base. It isn't a carrier then he cannot produce any bays. Also assuming the stallion is heterozygous for the dun factor.

I love that color calculater, even those i Have always been taught color is the last thing to breed for.

A good cowboy always has a better horse at the end of the ride, a poor cowboy will be afoot reguardless of the horse.
