Blue/Mama-to-be is confirmed, approximately 4 months. She was believed already bred when we purchased her, but now is confirmed.

She is grullo foundation QH (Poco lines) with lots of beautiful primitive markings. Daddy is a blue roan 1D/2D QH, so hopefully baby will be fast and cow-y. :)

We are hoping for a blue roan foal, as this breeding has produced two previously. But most importantly we want a healthy, well-conformed and good-minded baby. :)

Will get some pics as we can and start posting. She is not looking visibly pregnant yet, but starting to get a little cranky with her pals at feeding time. :)

Thank you! She is an absolute sweetheart. Next to the mini donkeys Walter and Paco (a whole other bucket of cute), I think she likes people the most out of the rest of the herd.

We are pretty excited actually. We just moved our youngest child into his dorm at college over the weekend and our youngest daughter moved out earlier this year...so this should help preoccupy us as we get used to being empty-nesters. lol

Baby Bump bump

Vet was out this morning and if she foals when he expects (ha), we should have baby in 6 weeks! (Oldest daughter, mom and mom-in-law's birthdays are all in the running - lol)

6 weeks is going to be f-o-r-e-v-e-r!!!

Here's mom:

Any day now!

On pins and needles, as should be any day now!

She's seriously bagged up, no waxing or milk droplets this morning (will check again in about an hour), but yesterday softening around her tail. So far she is not acting terribly restless, but the last two days spending more and more time in the foaling stall.

Any guesses on when she'll foal and on what color foal will be when born? (Sire is blue roan and Dam is grulla with very strong dun markings)

Also, starting to think on names for the foal.
Sire: JG Lowry Hancock
Dam: Lots of Lady Blue

Name suggestions are welcome. :)

Do you know what colors the grandparents were? Has the sire or dam had any red offspring? (Wondering if there could be a red gene hiding since its recessive.) If the sire has had roan foals, what color were they? I assume neither parent has been genetically tested for color (that would certainly make guessing easier!).

I don't know about Blue's dam. Her sire was grullo. She has some dun, black and buckskin going back in her pedigree. Lots of Lady Blue Quarter Horse

Sire's sire was blue roan and dam black. There is some red roan, sorrel and brown going back a bit in his pedigree. Jg Lowry Hancock Quarter Horse

As to previous foals, the only two I'm aware of were from previous breedings of these two and they were both blue roan...which is what we're hoping for. :)

Sounds likely you are looking at a foal with at least one dominant extension, and all recessive agouti, meaning it will be black. So the big question is will it be roan, dun, neither or both!

A grullo roan would sure be fun!

Update pics

1st pic from 3/22. The rest from a few minutes ago. Not the prettiest, but our weather has been so unsettled and rainy. It was like a rodeo in her belly there for a good while, but foal seems more quiet the last few days.

Pics - it's a colt!

Trying pics again. It is a colt and he's a big boy and so precious. We started handling and manners over the weekend, as he's going to need it! :) These two are about 1/2 hour after birth, I will post some more taken Friday evening.
