I'm considering breeding my pony mare who is 12.3/13hh, how tall can the stallion be? I was told anything under 15hh would be fine, but that seems a little on the tall side for her.
Height isn't a problem, build is. A foal won't get too big -height wise- for the mare's body, but could get too wide to pass through the birth canal. A taller stallion isn't as much concern as a broader stallion would be.
My 11 hand Shetland/welsh pony mare was accidentally bred by the neighbors Appaloosa/paint 15.2 hand stud. As upset as I was, now that he is here I just love him. He's already half the size of the mare at 2 weeks old. Posted via Mobile Device
Usually, the mare determines the size of the foal at birth, so the size of the stallion is not a huge concern.
