Its very important you get that done within the first 48hrs. He will take a blood sample to check for any diseases that are currently unseen, listen to his lungs to make sure they are functioning properly, and all that good stuff.

CONGRATS on your boy! Colts are SOOO much fun!
i havent told the story yet but if he could be suckling on his mum he would be. Im not choosing to bottle feed. He was born undercooked, in the middle of a storm and couldnt get up. By the time we found him his body temp was so low it wouldnt even register on the thermometer and he has a cold already. He's about 14 hours old now.

The vet has been here and everything is in order. I know you don't know me but im not an irresponsible breeder who doesnt know what they are doing ;) the vet was here within about 20 minutes of finding him so yeah, he's had the best of care but its up to him to keep drinking and stuff now.

Will do a full thread with the full story and pics later. For now he more than likely wants food again ;)

I'm sorry that happened, that can be very distressing for both mom and baby and of course you being second mom now. Are his legs getting a bit stronger yet? Hopefully he will be able to stand soon and make things a bit easier. How is mom doing?

Oh, honey, I'm so sorry. I know how anxious you were for this baby. At least he was in kind and caring hands for what little life he had. ((((HUGS))))

Foal
Oh my goodness I am so sorry. Loosing babies is never fun. =(

I was by no means calling you an irresponsible breeder, no worries. Sometimes these things happen and are out of our control. You sounded like you did everything in your power to save the little guy. Again I am so sorry for your loss.

Oh wow, I am so sorry. I know you certainly did everything you could do to save him. Sounds like he was too premature to continue.
hugs for you and Spirits mom.

I'm so sorry Spirit didn't make it.

A while back I was going through some rough times with my foal, as he was born with some health problems. Someone on a horse group posted this poem when someone else lost their horse and it really touched my heart so I saved it. It didn't state who the author was.
-----------------------------------------------------

I'll lend you for a little while my grandest foal, HE said.
For you to love while he's alive and mourn when he is dead.

It may be one or twenty years, or days or months, you see,
But will you, till I take him back, take care of him for me?

He'll bring his charms to gladden you, and should his stay be brief,
You'll have treasured memories as solace for your grief.

I cannot promise he will stay, since all from earth return,
But there are lessons taught on earth I want this foal to learn.

I've looked the wide world over In my search for teachers true.
And from the throngs that crowd life's lanes, with trust, I've chosen you.

Now will you give him total love? Not think the labor vain,
Nor hate me when I come here to take him back again?

I know you'll give him tenderness and love will bloom each day,
And for the happiness you've known, forever grateful stay

But should I come and call for him much sooner than you'd planned,
You'll brave the bitter grief that comes, and someday, understand.
