Indy was my first foal to ever do anything like this with. He had been born only a few hours prior to us seeing him. His mommy though, was kind of timid around humans, but as long as her owner was there, she was fine. So, I just went out there (my freind always imprinted) and whenever he was nursing, we tried to touch him as much as possible. Just running out hand over his bottom, neck, anywhere. Then, he got really tired, and went to sleep. My freind said then was the perfect time because he was worn out, and sleepy. So I knelt down beside him and petted his little face, legs, hooves. Then I let him sleep.
After that day, it got hard because, now that Indy could run, his mom would always run away from us and keep the baby away. And I couldn't catch her, only my freind, so I had to wait until she was there and available to help me. She told me to put one arm around his chest, and the other around his butt, and hold him. It was hard!! Then after he stopped struggling, I could let him go.
He was born in the summer, but I had to leave to go back to college. He stayed in a pasture untouched from then, till last weekend, when we weaned him, and is now at my house. My mom is gentling him by petting him everyday and stuff.
But it's amazing how much he remembers from that first day. He doesn't have a problem with his ears or legs being touched at all. He never has! |
