Okay, another question... If there's no test for splash, what makes them think frame causes blue eyes as well? What if every horse with blue eyes that tested positive for frame also carried splash? Could splash be the ONLY gene that causes blue eyes?

^

That's a darn good question and something I've pondered myself. I have no idea why they think frame can cause blue eyes - the two patterns can easily mimic each other, and if we can't test for splash, why would we ever assume it's frame?

Exactly.

Now I'm wondering whether I should refer to Mystique as black overo, instead of just black. Haha

Depending on the circumstances, I would definitely list her technical color as black splash. I'll bet money she's splash.

What circumstances are you referring to?

I was just editing the pictures in my 'barn' and saw her color listed as black and that's what made me think of it... haha.

Haha, I guess I meant in day to day life, you could be in for quite the "conversation" if you tell people she's black splashed white. Actually, you could have just as many conversation telling people she's black pinto!

Haha, that's definitely true! I actually am going to register her with PtHA. She was eligible to be registered breeding stock (before they changed the rules and allowed ANYTHING to be registered breeding stock) because of her nose, eyes, and a tiny yellow part of one hoof.

If she tests positive for frame, you know she's frame.

If she tests negative, she's splash.

But just testing positive for frame doesn't mean she isn't also splash.

The sabino test is a waste of money, IMO, because it only tests one of the MANY sabino genes. A negative test doesn't mean a horse isn't sabino as well.

Thanks for the info!

A sabino test would be helpful if they tested positive... it's really only a waste of money if they tested negative (which she did, haha).

To the best of my knowledge this colt is a true black/splash white stud book thoroughbred
