Ok, So I just bred my APHA mare to a AQHA bay roan stud, When I bought my mare they said she was tested homozygoues. Does that mean that she will for sure throw a colored baby? She is a red roan sobiano with blue eyes. Pretty loud. Oh and this is my first mare in foal! Any tips for me!?!
THANKS Im so excited!
Looking at your mare I can't see she can be homozygous for anything. Not for tobiano pattern or black.Looks like she is Probably a OLWS carrier if anything & bred to another carrier there is a chance of lethal white Or in other words homozygous frame overo.
She could be homozygous roan... Were both her sire and dam roans?
There are three overo patterns, frame, sabino, and splash. Frame is lethal homozygous, and I believe that sabino and splash1 are both perfectly safe homozygous.
In terms of white patterns, you were lied to by her owners. She is not tobiano, so can't be homozygous for that. She is probably frame, but can only have one copy of that gene, otherwise she would not be here. She could be homozygous for sabino or splash, but since the test for splash is really new, and there is no good test for sabino, there is no possible way for her previous owners to say she was homozygous or not.
I can tell you something she is homozygous for - red.
