Heartbeat through stethoscope??

I recently rescued a pregnant mare and I am wondering if it is possible to hear the heartbeat with a stethoscope??

I never could when mine was pregnant, even days before she foaled. I asked my vet about it one day, he said he never could either, and very few can.

The baby's heartbeat I'm assuming? I have only been able to hear them through ultrasounds.

No. There is too much between the baby and the outside of the belly to hear a foal's heartbeat with a stethoscope.
