Question How long before birth????

Does anyone know how long it usually takes for a BELGIAN mare that is bred to a mammoth jack to give birth after her teats begin to wax?? She started waxing yesterday morning, but still hasn't had the baby. I have raised quarter horses all my life and have experience with them giving birth, but this is my first go round with a belgian mule baby. I have already learned that it takes 12 months instead of 11 for them to give birth, so I wondered if the labor would be different, also. Thanks for the help.

It all depends on the mare. She may be the type that waxes for weeks on end before finally foaling or she could go as quick as tonight. There are other factors that need to be looked at besides just waxing.

I am pretty sure that it could happen any time from right now to a couple of weeks. Sometimes, they will start dripping within just a couple of days of foaling. I wish you good luck with your mule and I want to see pictures after it is born. I have been around Belgian mules all my life. They are just tooooo sweet.

With mine they drip and within 24 hours I have a baby. But they are all different and love to make us wait. Will be looking for pictures!

As soon as you think "I give up watching" she'll have it

This was exactly what happened with my mare! Too funny!

I would say that you really should be watching close if she is waxing, have you noticed her butt muscles relaxing, vulva getting longer and relaxing.....I never noticed my mare's stomach change shape (sometimes they get a V shape when the baby is in position)- they each have their own routine though.

I created a journal for my mare so that if we do breed her again, I can know what to look for.

Good luck to you and post pictures when the baby comes!

Any news?

I've found that with mine, for the most part, they will foal just as soon as you stop watching them. We had one mare that we stopped watching at 10am (they generally foal at night, or early morning) and as soon as my daughter took a shower (10 min max) she foaled! Another foaled at 4pm when we ran to the corner store. They just love to drive you crazy!
