Lady had her baby!

My husband and I were fortunate enough to get 2 mares and a 6 month old filly about 3 weeks ago. We had been planning on getting these horses for about 4 or 5 weeks before we finally moved them to our land. They were used as broodmares and had never really been around people. They are 3 years old and 11 (she has the 6 month old filly). We were told Lady (3 year old, beautiful sorrel ) was pregnant and would have her foal the first part of April. Well, like everyone else on foal watch we we watching her like a hawk, however she thinks we are the purple, horse eating people, so she wouldn't get to close to us! I just got her to eat out of a feed bucket last week. I can get about 5 feet away from her while she is eating, but come any closer and she spooks. We didn't really want to push her in case she really was pregnant (we were begining to have our doubts), so we were happy with her finally eating out of the super scary feed bucket. Where they came from was grass only, no feed or hay.
So this morning my husband went to feed them (our land is about 10 miles from our house). Sage, the 11 year old (palomino) and her baby usually come running when they see our truck, she knows its time for breakfast and she has decided that is some good stuff! Sage is the dominate one and she has no problems telling Lady and Cactus what to do. Lady was standing at the corner of our land (40 acres) and Sage and Cactus would start to go to the round pen but would walk a few steps, stop then look back at Lady. They did this a few times then finally just stopped and would not move. They usually run to the round pen for food. My husband called me, told me what was going on, so I told him to go check on Lady, something was not right. It was then that he found her foal lying down. Not only was Lady not going to leave her, but Sage and Cactus were not going to leave them for their breakfast either. I threw on my shoes and ran out there! She is beautiful. Her dad is the same color as Lady, but she is pretty light. Ladys mom is palomino. Of course Lady won't let us get too close!

Congratulations on your newest arrival!
Will you be getting more hands on with these horses? It sounds like they will be better off with you from what you said they came from of never having anything other then field grass.

We are definitely gettimg more hands on. I know it may not sound like much, but we just about have a halter on Sage. With no human interaction what so ever we are happy with that for now. She, Sage, will be going to the trainer next month. Even though she is 11, we think she can be broke. She is a sweetheart.

Sorry about the pics being small, but that is really the best we have.

Thanks everyone! We are in love with our new addition. They are all still hanging around each other and staying clear of the round pen (where we normally feed them), so we decided to take the feed buckets to them. I was able to get about 3-4 feet from Lady and the colt so I decided to sit down in the field for a minute and watch them. My husband was off to the side of me with Sage and Cactus. It was a beautiful day, we were just watching them, and it was then I noticed it.... Our colt Chole is not a Chole at all she is a HE!! So Miss Chole is now Mr Cowboy! That's what happens when you rely on your 15 year old son to tell you what the gender is of your colt!
