This is a new thread to keep updates on Magic's baby. We have been calling her cute little names, but nothing is sticking for me. Any ideas or suggestions would be great. Thanks again and hopefully we can keep this thread drama free! Please and thank you. This is my first foal, aside from my Shetland's first baby, which was uneventful and very easy. Magic's has been good, with a few hiccups along the way...Been battling with diarrhea and her bottom has been scalded from it. I started probiotics, per the vet and it seems to have worked so far..this is the fourth day of probiotics for her. She started the loose stool at about 9 days but when it continued past 4 days I knew there was more to it. My vet told me to give her 10grams of probiotics and 500 lbs of safeguard/Panacur for 5 days...I was leery of worming her that much that young so I decided to try just the probiotics 1st. Through the whole ordeal she has been very alert, drinking, nursing, eating grass and hay, wagging her tail, running and no temp..I am curious to see if anyone else would worm her that much and this young?
Also been applying desatin 40% zinc to her bottom and it seems much better, been doing that twice a day. Will that scar or will her hair grow back after the irritation stops?
Thanks to all for any help in advance.

Magic had to be put down today. I now need help on what to do about feeding suggestions for the baby.
She is a month old tomorrow.
Magic was unable to stand this morning. Had minimal use of her back legs. Has been vaccinated for everything. We gave her calcium as a last stitch effort to get her up, thinking maybe it was milk fever. After vet examined her and watched her try to right herself, he said he believed that she has somehow injured or broken her back. It was the hardest decision i have ever had to make, and I am heart broken and even more heart broken for the baby.
Please, any help is appreciated!
Thanks in advance.

I"m so sorry this happened, Heather. Luckily the baby is a month old and able to eat. Has she been eating with mom? Feed? Hay?

You should probably buy some milk replacement pellets and start her on a good feed, but I'm sure someone more knowledgable than I can tell you exactly how to do that.

What did your vet say?

Also ... google is your friend. There is TONS of info out on the net about orphan foals.

Again, I'm sorry.

WHAT? I am stunned. How could this have happended? Magic had no health issues, right? and suddenly she had to be put down? So, she injured herself out playing in the pasture? This is a very sad development. I am so sorry for you.
I have not advice on the feeding , as I have no experience there. Would you like me to update the title of this thread?

no the injury happened in her foaling stall. there were no signs anything had happened. she just coukd not get up. vet said definatly a spinal injury of some sort. she had no issues prior to this. vet said it is something that can just happen..just wrenched her back and either broke it or pinched a nerve. either way the most humane thing to do was to euthanize her. now i am just focusing on keeping baby
comfotable and eating. she is eating feed and hay. not intetested in milk so we are gonna see how she does. she is a strong booger and i have faith she will pull through.
