First, let me say hello since I am new to the forum
My TWH mare, Dalilah is due to foal any time now. I got her in August of 2011 as a trail/pleasure horse. I board her at my neighbor's barn which is just down the road, so I can see her any time I want to. This was not an intentional breeding. Even though my mare comes from strong lines, and the stud is a wgc, I had no intentions of breeding her! She was turned out in pasture with several other mares, and when the barn owner let his mares in to the lot where he had turned out his stud to check/breed those that were in my mare was in with the bunch. He wasn't aware she had come up with the others, and of course the stud bee lined for my mare, bred her, and she caught! Needless to say I was not happy and only in the last few months have I actually become excited about the baby. Well, now I am on pins and needles and can't wait!!
This is my first experience with foaling, and I am a nervous wreck. I have done tons of research, have the books, foaling kit ready, vet on standby, etc. I check her several times a day and have been taking pictures to document progress. I would love to try and be around for the birth, but I realize there's a slim chance of that. I can't really tell if she looks ready or not! Please feel free to give any input, suggestions, advice, etc!
Just for future reference, you can have pregnancies aborted early in horses with just a shot of lute (in this case I would have given the shot within the week of covering). It's a lot less than having another horse and can be bought right from your vet.
Ya someone else mentioned the shot also....If I would have known I would have had it done. I hate to say that now as excited as I am about this foal, but truth be told it's what I would have done. I honestly didn't think she would catch with him just getting her the one time! Go figure
when our mare max was close we looked for all the "signs" swollen whowho waxed nipples and it never came :-(...went out to feed and found a little foal all cozy in her stall with her mommy...i was soooo bumbed that id missed it, but very happy she had a healthy baby..i was told though to make sure that they poop lol...good luck and enjoy the experiance
they reply SUB so they are subscribed you can actually so this with out replying but some don't know or just don't do it that way. then when they sub they get updated on new posts
Can't wait to see pictures. I hope everything goes well for momma and baby. I know how you feeling being excited and anixous. My mare had a foal last May. I was a complete mess. Worrying that I'll miss the birth or that something was going to go wrong. Luckily everything went fine and I was able to see Athena being born. Although Bella didn't not make that easy. I stayed up all night watching her pace and finally I heard her water break about 5:30am. 10 minutes later Athena was looking at me like "what just happened?"
Congrates! (even though it wasn't planned.) Sounds like the baby will have a good home.
Thanks Bella I would really love to get to see it, I've never seen a foal born so it would be awesome to get to see. I'm checking her a few times a day and making sure I spend enough time to notice anything different in behavior, eating, etc. I'm going to go see her in just a few minutes and will get more pics to see if anyone can see any changes from the other day
Got some pics today! She is definitely softer in the tail. It was jiggly while I brushed her  Also, her udder felt warm where as previously it was cool to the touch. Her belly looks lower too. What do you guys think?
Is this the same law in every state? Or is it different for states, cities, counties, etc? Is it just for registered stock? Just curious, because I have never heard of it.
So I went down early this morning to check on my girl, and I found her stuck in the elevated walk between the stall sections in the barn! What a ding dong. Thankfully her getting out was as simple as me opening the door on the end and her jumping down. I'm pretty sure I was a sight for sore eyes because as soon as she saw me she perked up and scampered towards me. The only thing I can figure is she jumped in from the far end opening, and I'm sure it's because boss mare had her cornered. She's on the low end of the totem pole.
But, thankfully, she made it through her mini ordeal unscathed. She wasn't even too stressed or worried. Once she was out she visited with me for a minute and abruptly turned and went to the door that she used to be turned out of into the back pasture, realized it was closed, then went over to the bales of hay that were stacked nearby and started eating. Business as usual LOL!
Oh yes, I have a foal kit all ready to go. She is in the barn/barn lot, so she has access to stalls or the lot right now. I plan to put her up in one of the large interior stalls once it looks like she is ready or close to having it. But, in the event she surprises everyone and has it without any future warning, she is in a place that is safe and ok for her to foal.
Well, I checked her again this evening and she is softer in the back and her nipples look like they have gotten fatter. No waxing or any other noticeable changes though. She was happily gorging away on hay.
