Well it's totally up to you of course but on another forum I belong to a first time "momma" put mare and foal back with her other horses and now the foal's injured and it could be a permanent injury. Where I lease they breed APHA/AQHA horses and they're all kept in seperate fields from each other (ie. One horse to a pen unless it's a mare with a baby on her side).
As for putting a halter on, do you have a round pen or a stall? When I bought my weanling she wouldn't let me walk up to her let alone halter her. I had to get her cornered into a stall and close the door. I then waited until she calmed down and slowly kept trying to approach her and pet her. Once she let me do it I looped a lead rope around her neck and held it (I didn't tie it, just threw it over and grabbed the other end and held them together in one hand). That way you at least "have her" where she isn't making you chase her. Then with the free hand I tried over and over to put the halter on until she finally let me. Once I had it on, I didn't take it off!
