When can I put my new momma and baby back out with my other horse(mare)?
My farm breeds shetlands, and they have a group of around 10 mares - most of them are in lessons, not all are bred every year. Anyway, so far this year, we only have one baby and he and his mother were out with the other mares after a couple of days. It is like this most of the time. Last year two mares lived with a stallion for the entire year and their foals were kept in there as well until they were re-bred.
I don't know if that's "advisable," but that's how it is done at my barn.
Also, there are a few horses with foals(last year.) The three mares lived with one another and their foals until they were weaned, then all the foals lived together and the mares went back out in the big fields. Also, there were a couple of welsh crosses with foals and they were kept with the shetlands.
I hope this helps. :) Good luck with them
