Okay everyone - what do you make of THIS guy?!

Pedigree Query Forum - View topic - RHF's new Mystery Colored TB Stallion

Definately splash.

Do you think chimera? Will he ever replicate it in his foals?

He is a TB stallion and I have never seen anything like him before. The Catch A Bird chimera in Australia looked totally different from how he looks

Isnt he just the coolest looking animal you have ever seen?!

I am SO glad Carolyn is pulling hairs and getting all sorts of tests done on him as well. And Im thrilled someone like her got him that really appreciates how darned unique he is!

Wow! That coloring is amazing! He looks like a calico cat lol. I have no clue what would've caused that as I don't really know anything about color genetics and whatnot but I'd be very interested to hear what caused that.

Very cool!

He is definitely a chimera. A chimera is basically a patchwork quilt of two animals with two different genetic codes, so he will pass one of his codes or the other (which ever is present in his reproductive organs), but not both. Therefore, the foal will definitely not look like him.
When they do test on the hair samples, they will find that the "two animals" is he made of will appear to be brothers, or otherwise closely related.

I agree. We always see chimerism as brindle, but why? This could just be chimerism asking in a different way. The fact that he seems to be displaying both the black and the red gene definately makes me think of two horses swirled together.

It will be fascinating to find out what the verdict is! I bet he won't be passing it on as a genetic color though - I personally think he's going to be found to have a mutated version of both red and black with the pinto gene and likely pass either one of those colors on to his foals.

MM - you're right. He would replicate the splash markings, but not the "chimera-ism"

But now the OP is saying it was "all a joke" He's not a TB after all, but an APHA stallion. Whatever ... he's interesting no matter what breed he is, but why tell everyone he's TB and that you just bought him???

Sorry. I find that a little odd ...

That's...silly. I mean, it's an abnormal color either way, why lie about the breed? I don't get people sometimes.

LOL when I first saw him I was like' that is a messed up thoroughbred!'
Haha, I love his coloring, that is so cool!
How do people get that coloring? Do people try to breed for it?

If there are no horses in heaven... im not going.

That is very interesting. I remember my dad telling me about a horse he rode a long time ago that was double bred hancock that was a sorrel but had a black bald face. I wonder if he could have been like this horse.

Always remember that feeling of looking at a big, open country over the ears of a good horse, seeing a new trail unwind ahead of you, and that ever-spectacular view from the top of the ridge!!! Follow my training blog: http://robertsontraining.blogspot.com/
