As some may know - we have two rescued oldenburg weanling fillies - we have had for almost 2 months now - they have been adjusting well and improving daily. Our oldenburg cross weanling has become fast friends with them, particularly the older weanling and our boarder's pony has also accepted them very well.
Anyway, we have a lot of coyotes around and even during the day when they are outside I worry about them. So I decided that our weanling's mom (fully weaned) might be a good paddock mate for the little ones.
I was so right. She went out with them yesterday in the arena - because it was raining - her daughter came up and tried to nurse - mom said no,
Then the two rescue weanlings tried to nurse - The mare very gently lifted her leg and pushed them away. She then proceeded to smell them all over - they just stood there while she checked them out. After that they were all eating hay.
I still get teary when I think about it. These babies were weaned very abruptly so it was really tender to see them go to this mare. She is an exceptional mare.
Today they all went out into the field and it was the mare with the three babies in tow. It was so cute.
Anyway - hope you enjoyed the story.
