Okay, of course they "can be", but do pure Arabians carry the palomino gene? I've heard people say they can't. I have a rescue Arab that's palomino, but of course he isn't pure. :P, just curious! :)

Thanks!

Nope, Chey Aut is dead on, there is no cream gene nor dun gene nor pearl gene nor champagne gene in Arabs. They're kinda boring in the color department

However, you CAN get extreme flaxen chestnuts like Fire And Ice which fuel a whole new fire of debate for people arguing Arabs can be palomino. He's even registered palomino, but that would be due to the registries themselves being completely uneducated about color.

That is an extremely lovely chestnut with flaxen mane and tail, but I don't know how he can be registered as a palomino.

If he's registered with the AHA, it's as a chestnut.

I imagine he's registered as a palomino with the Palomino color registry? Still silly, since he's definitely not a pally with that coloration.

Apparently sight on what they appear, because he wouldn't genetically test for palomino. If you look at a photo from behind, he's blatantly chestnut. And he only ever SIRES palomino when bred to a cream based non-Arabian mare. All his purebred Arabian get are the same flaxen chestnut color.

He's unusually extreme, but not palomino.

ROFL, I hate most registries. It's so dumb - I believe the AQHA just made an amendment to allow high white stockings and bald faces? Do they not realize this is sabino and that they are essentially allowing some pintos and not others? It's just so ridiculous. The system is archaic and you'd think at least ONE registry would bone up on color genetics and get it right.

This is because these sabino or splash horses with the markings you describe have 100% Quarter Horse blood. Gunner is an excellent example of this (Colonels Smoking Gun Quarter Horse). He's splash overo with a bald face and stockings, but because he is a purebred Quarter Horse, he is registered AQHA.
However, the tobiano gene does not exist in Quarter Horses, and therefore that type of pattern is not accepted into the AQHA. Basically, the AQHA amended their rule so that purebred Quarters can be registered AQHA, no matter their color.

Wow, how could they mistake Fire and Ice for a pali :?? LOL. Yeah, the AQHA has some pretty funky rules when it comes to white markings. For a long time, they were really strict about no color above the bottom of the joint or in the middle of the face but now, they will take almost everything. There used to be some rule about 'crop-out' horses but I am not very familiar with it. I believe that it was reserved for a true freak accident of a horse; like a horse with nothing but QH parents all the way back is born with a white patch on a hip or neck, etc.

Unless I am mistaken, even before they started changing the rules, he could have been registered as a 'crop-out' QH with the AQHA. However, I am not sure about the rules and they may not have allowed his get to be registered if he had been labelled crop-out.

That was my entire point. I'm well aware of the fact that purebred QH can be pinto, but does the AQHA allow a splashed white horse that has loud body markings and not JUST the high stockings and bald face? There are plenty of variations of sabino and splashed white that do not equal just "excessive white", are they now allowed to be registered?

Yes. As long as they can verify that they are 100% purebred quarters, it does not matter how expressed the overo is. For example, the Gunner filly Guns and White Roses (Guns And White Roses) is a maximally expressed splash and is pure white. She is registered AQHA. This son of Gunner, BCR Loose Cannon (Bliss Creek Ranch: Cowhorses with Charisma - Greg & Meg Anthony in Cle Elum, Washington) also has a lot of body white and is still AQHA. Sorry I keep bringing up Gunner and his offspring, it's just really easy to find good splash examples in that line lol!

Yes sorry I should have clarified - he's dual registered with both the AHA and the Palomino Registry. Which is just plain sad - I would expect at least a COLOR registry to be more up to date on their genetics and how it works. Anyone with a brain should know a purebred Arabian being registered as palomino just doesn't compute.

With the AHA, he'd be registered as chestnut and as far as I can tell even his owners are fully aware he's not genetically palomino, but it's a good gimmick to trick people who don't know much about it. They're really good at showing ONLY his palomino offspring as opposed to all his partbred offsrping, along with all his purebred get that turns out the same color as him. Out of 250 confirmed foals, it's cute how only the dozen or so palomino ones end up on his page.
