Question on Collecting Semen

I am getting a 9mo. Gypsy vanner colt. He's registered and both parents are from breeding in England. I'm wondering when I could collect semen from him. I have a big qh mare that I would love to AI in a couple years but I would love to show him as a gelding. No I'm not going to be breeding stray horses and I will not breed unless home for offspring is found as I am getting him for a fun lifetime project. Just wondering when you can collect semen and how long it can be frozen? Thanks so much (: god bless

In the uk we don't really recognise gypsy vanners as breeds as they are two a penny here. Unless the horse has impecible conformation, proven and the dam also, I wouldnt personally breed as there is enough waste out there.

Sorry.

Call Select Breeders in Aubrey, TX, and ask them for a list of fees. Or, find a breeders service in your area, which you will need to do , anyway. I think it sounds like a LOT of money to breed a cross-breed colt. I figure since the chute fee at my vet is $250, plus labwork to determine vialbility and proper extender, the tank fee(somebody has to pay for the Nitrogen) then the fees again to breed the mare......it adds up FAST!!

Good Luck, and let us see the colt!

This article seems to have good info. It says age three or older for a decent quality collection. -->Select Breeders Services - Collecting Semen from the Young Stallion

Sounds like a lot of work and expense indeed.
