Foalings on those farms are so well attended that there is such a minimal risk of that sort of thing going wrong (I am not saying it can't happen). The halter gives those in attendance an easy way to quickly hold/control the mare if/when needed vs. having to try and muck around with putting the halter on in the heat of the moment -- in situations where that sort of handling is needed seconds can count and you don't want to add to the commotion by trying to wrestle a halter onto the mare.

Luckily nothing went wrong and the world has one more adorable little racehorse now(:

I won't get in to how I feel about the breeding that goes in to racing, it would ruin the mood(:

Ooo yay! Going to have to watch out for that lil guy in a few years!

Its always advisable to have a halter on the mom when you are there......we haltered our mare as soon as she went into labor (as at this point we watch 24/7).......and removed the halter after foaling once mom and baby were given a clean bill of health and left alone.

Every time we were in the barn dealing with mare and foal we always halter the mare and then remove it when we leave.

Oooo...who was Zenyatta bred to? I follow racing on and off and I loved watching her race...she gave them boys a run for the money! This should be an awesome foal!

Zenny was bred to Bernardini. The same stallion who will be bred to Rachel Alexandra for her next foal.

Now if they bred Zenny to Curlin....what a weird family relation! Haha
