Random Foaling question

When my mare Dream had Sassy, she bled out of her vulva for about a week. Sometimes it was just a trickle, then sometimes when she would lay down or roll it was like a huge flood. Our vet at the time said that it was normal. But, when I joked about it to a different vet, she thought it was rather strange.
Any ideas?
Please notice this was 5 years ago, first foal we had, and whatever information we got was from our vet. So, don't jump my case if you find it necessary.

Foal
Sounds like the foal tore her when she pushed it out. I had a mare that the foal tore her badly inside the vaginal area and we gave antibiotics for the next week or so. You could not see the damage outside so much but she bled on and off little bits for a few days. I gather we were lucky as some foals have ripped through the rectum and it's game over for the mare. We were told to make sure she got a breeding examination before ever breeding her again, this was so vet could assess damage and clear her for safe breeding and delivery. I gather they can do surgery to fix it if required. In our case the mare was older and this was to be first and last foal.
