Welllll, I am not so sure about that article, but my repro prof used to say the more the stallion was bred, the more colts he would have. My mare has been the ONLY mare bred by the stallion 4 times, and I have 4 FILLIES!! Although, her mother had 3 fillies that were not "only children", so perhaps it is in the line.

I only want another foal by this one mare, and then I have no reason to breed anymore, so the point is moot (for me) anyway.

OP,Which breeding operation do you work for? Or are you just in school?

Foal
Good Morning! Yes, this technology will cost a little more than conventional frozen semen processing but this is normal with any assisted reproduction technique. I have the exciting opportunity to run the North America division of this type of program at the company I work for, Sexing Technologies! We are currently in research trials and thus determining all the fun details such as pricing etc so I cannot say a number yet but it's looking like per ejaculate, not per straw (which is how the cattle industry works).

Bridgertrot, you are close :)

The machine is a MoFlo (Modular Flow high performance cell sorter). These machines are used to sort for many types of cells and bacteria but ST has fine tuned it to be specific to sperm and what our product needs. Stained cells leave the nozzle of the machine traveling single file in a charged stream, a laser beam excites the fluorochromes which fluoresce and emit photons at specific wavelengths, charged droplets that contain one droplet each break away from the stream and pass between 2 charged plates, the charge of each plate direct each droplet into either a "X", "Y", or waste receptacle.

I forgot to add, the current purity of the bulls sorted is around 90% female or male, whichever gender is chosen. Also, both genders can be sorted for at the same time, if needed.

The time it takes is dependent on the initial ejaculate criteria. Meaning, how much volume we have to start with, the concentration, and how good the motility and morphology are determine how well and how long the machines sort.

Hi XY :)

Wouldn't it be awesome if we could do something like this for live cover! I'm dreaming for something that is obviously impossible... I just only want the one foal from my mare and I really want a filly - and have heard that the success rates for AI for maidens are very low compared to live cover. Sigh. If what I've heard is incorrect, that opens up a world of possibilities for studs to choose from... always nice for the discerning breeder who only wants the best for their mare and prospective foal!

Edit; breeding is a few years off yet, my mare is only 2 and I want to have a nice large lump sum squirrelled away before I take that big of a risk with my girl... she's special <3

Blue eyed pony, do not be afraid to breed your mare AI!! I have bred 2 maidens AI, one with cooled and shipped, one directly from the stallion, and both were NO problem.

Good Luck!

Thank you, that opens up a lot of possibilities for me :) some very very nice stallions internationally. Also some very nice stallions on the east coast that wouldn't be available to me if I was going live-cover only. I think it's a matter of choosing who compliments my mare best and will produce what I want in a foal. I want an eventer/showjumper with height, substance [Filly is fine, with small feet, so I want a foal with more bone and bigger feet], talent, and a willing, trainable, ammy-friendly temperament.

At the moment I'm wavering between imported semen from the European jumping stallion Luidam, live cover from the imported all-round-bred stallion HG Salzburg [dressage and jumping lines on both sides], and a very very nice chestnut Arabian stallion called Chelleason Bey Chall [for an Anglo foal - an Anglo wouldn't be an upper-level horse but it's an incredibly versatile cross], but I have heaps of time to decide, and if I'm looking at AI I can look more seriously interstate and internationally.

I'm very interested in doing this as there is a stallion I want to breed with and can only afford to breed with him once ($5,000 stud fee) and I would REALLY like a filly for my breeding program to enhanse my mare lines.

I would REALLY like to find out what a quote would be for this, Can they do it with frozen or is it a fresh cooled only?
