Showing stallion, Need help with this!!!

OK, so was not sure if this question should go here or what..... So I just got this gourgous well bred buckskin Mini stallion, he is 15 and a friend and I are planning on showing him this year and breeding him next year. So we have 3 mini mares on our property, when we first got him (last month) he was very out of control with his manners. He has gotten lots better with me working with him. So my question is....I want to show him this year, but as soon as he sees another horse mare, gelding ect... he drops his penis and gets hard, well we can't have this happen in a show Right (tell me if Im wrong) and I don't want him to do it when he is not breeding any ways, so how do I get him to keep it in his pants??? LOL :) Or what can I do to get it sucked back up when he does drop??? I tried flicking it with a rope (not hard) but he seems to get excited. Please help and thank you very much!! :)

I've seen many stallions at shows drop like you described, and it happens. Some people actually do smack it to make him hold it in while he's working. Just a thought. Chances are judges won't mark you down for it... but that's my opinion, I have no experience showing Miniatures

NO NO NO NO!!! Don't EVER smack or abuse his penis PLEASE! That is SO cruel, and not to mention, what will happen is you will make him afraid to drop and when you go to breed him he won' t want to perform for you. This is a LARGE mistake that some Stallion handlers make (usually out of not understanding stallion behaviour, or because they are afraid), and it will cost you big time in the end. The best way to make him suck it up is to back him up or put him to work so his focus must stay on you, take him for a quick trot around, make him move over, etc. It does work!! If you start abusing his penis, he very well could turn on you and attack, you don' t want to make an enemy with a stallion. He must behave, don't get me wrong, but giving him a smack with the lead rope on his chest and growling at him to put it away as well as moving him around to get his focus back on you is how it is done. Not hitting 'it'. Think if you have a teenaged boy, you aren't going to wack him one in the crotch if he gets an erection looking at a girl are you?? So don't do it to the horse!! LOL!!

Cheekyhorse..... I have not abused his penis, and Im not planning on abusing it. Last thing I want to do is hurt him in any way. Only one time I tried to get him to suck it back up, I just tossed the rope at it, no way possible it could have hurt him. I have tried the keeping him moving thing and he will work with it hanging, he will eventually get it back up there. And that's why im here asking for any advice. I don't ever remember having such a big problem with the big horses when I was growing up around the breeding.

I'm so sorry if it sounded like I said to hit it... I meant a light tap. Anyways, it was something others had suggested on this forum, I didn't agree with it...

I didn't mean it to sound that either of you were being cruel, I was just stating the fact that SOME stallion owners tend to do this and it is not a good form of management.
Is this guy just standing there quietly with an erection, or does he call out and act obnoxious on top of that??
If they just stand there quietly I tend to do nothing, but if you are at a horse show the best remedy is working them. Exercise will generally make them retract, although I have known stallions that will continue around the arena at a canter and still have the erection. Those are usually young stallions though, and is not normally the way it is. I even know of a TB stallion that went around being schooled over fences with an erection......but that made him FINALLY suck it back up. How annoying would THAT be?? LOL!!!
If he is being loud and obnoxious smack him with a whip or the end of the lead in the chest and yell 'quit it' or ' no talking'. Keep doing that until he is quiet and then leave him be. He should soon get the idea. You may have to just truck him to a few places to be handled/worked around other horses to learn that he is not there to breed and is there to work so he gets the idea. It may be tough and take a while though as this guy is older. Sorry, I wish I could be of more help.

Oh I know, I was just clearing it up, so you dident think I was hurting him. :)

Sooo....He does it as soon as I put the halter on him to take him out of his stall. He drops and just starts squealing so load, he gets all worked up and is just crazy. He dosent try to hurt any body though. He just thinks every time I go out there I am taking him to breed. Grrr.... I have tried walking him past everyone one over and over and over again, and he just calls constantly to them, and is droped the whole time. I do carry a little crop with me, and I smack him on the chest with it, but he dosent seem to care or get bothered by it at all. He has no fear at all. Tonight I took two hours and tried to work with him, but he is just so hard headed.... :)

NEVER!!! Punish your stallion for dropping, That is his job, The number one thing is training, distraction is the first thing , we carry a soda can with pebbles in it , if the stallion starts screaming or dropping shake the can vigerously. Now don't over do it or he will get used to it and it wont do any good. If he is standing like a gentleman and dropped let it me , time will change that.
