Simple question...
I know that this is going to seem like a ridiculously simple question to most of you, but can someone
please
tell me what the REAL definition of a
brood mare
is? Is it a mare who can be used for breeding or a horse that is actually pregnant?
Thanks!

Just a mare used for breeding, doesn't have to be pregnant :)

Pretty much. Some people have broodmares and then stop breeding them to ride, or retire them.
