IMO, the unwanted horse population is flooded due to people breeding tons of horses out in a pasture, then later dumping them in an auction, or people breeding a bunch of horses in quantity, not quality, to sell their foals for $200.

The group of people who are thinking about breeding one mare and care enough to come talk to strangers about it in a forum, aren't the problem.

They are a very small percentage vs. the mass amount of TB's bred to run then thrown away when crippled or too slow(or similar circumstances such as this), the foals off mares who were only bred to lactate or for their pee, and like I said above, the people who have a BUNCH of horses and breed absolute crap to crap.
If you're coming on a horse forum to decide if you should breed your horse or not...youre **** right you're the problem.

Your Mom could sell Spice and you don't legally have any rights to her. I had a crappy step dad and I was told he could sell or get rid of anything I owned as long as I was a minor under his authority. My mare was listed in APHA under my mare as well.
MyLittlePonies likes this.

I'm not going to get in on this argument as I am young and in college I might add, I'll admit it, I'm not afraid to admit my faults, but even I am having trouble and still am dependent on my parents and my job at this point. The point is, I agree with trainerunlimited, we should be explaining this stuff. Not bashing. Plus, we have no idea what kind of background her or her parents have with horses. Just what she gives us and I did go back and read her other thread so I am aware of what is being said, but I'm not here to bash.

I just did a calculation of how much I will be spending on just my mare's pregnancy. (just feeding alone for pregnancy is about $2,213.43 minimal with grain, hay, and mare suppliment). OP, do you think you can afford this kind of care? There isn't a way around this kind of money being spent. This price that I calculated doesn't count her with the foal. It's almost impossible to tell how much you are spending during her lactation till she's had the foal. This is 11 months btw for the calculations.

Again, I'm not in on the arguments/bashing just giving you an idea of what you could be spending and that was just pregancy. It'll cost more once the foal is born.

.

We're not attacking her in anyway. It just so happens that a majority of people on the forum have the same opinion about breeding in this situation. Everyone voicing their own opinion is not bashing nor is it attacking.

Again, this has zero to do with the OP's topic.

^ good post.

People don't realize that breeding...vet care etc for a mare and then a born foal costs about 3x in 1 year than a regular horse would.

OK, Banman, you have asked a question and like it, or not, you have been given a number of answers. The consensus seems to be that the breeding of a lame mare would be unwise.

Since it doesn't seem to be that this thread will generate any other theories about breeding this particular mare, I am closing this thread.
